Capturing the potential of digital technology in the NHS sector
How well do we understand the NHS shift to cloud and automation technologies? Do we understand the common challenges faced in the adoption of new digital solutions? The importance of these investments?
At Fusion Global Business Solutions, we’ve partnered with National Health Executive, BMC Software and The Dudley Group NHS Trust to better understand these questions and help answer what the attainable benefits are from better understanding the move to new digital technologies, such as cloud and automation.
Gathering primary data direct from those within the NHS whose everyday roles and responsibilities are affected by this understand – or lack of, as some of our data revealed – we were able to uncover a range of patterns which were both expected and surprising. For example, there was huge negative discourse raised around where in the modernisation process many NHS trusts or organisations, with some 82% of respondents suggesting they were very early in their cloud journeys. Yet, equally, almost half knew of discussions around digital technology and the potential of cloud and automation solutions going on at a senior level regularly, with more than a third of those occurring with confidence in the understanding of the technology.
There are certainly challenges faced with modernising NHS technology – particularly around resource, training and service management.
Yet, they’re not insurmountable obstacles. Some trusts have already shown significant efforts to innovate and overcome any challenges faced – with the work done between Northumbria Healthcare NHS FT and BMC proving a perfect case study – and as such find themselves quite far along on their digital journey.
Gary Pruden, CTO at Fusion GBS said: “People understand the importance of investing in technology. It just has to prove its worth and be the right technology.”
For others, now represents the perfect opportunity to seize the momentum and push on with modernisation and digitisation initiatives within their NHS trusts and organisations. Conversations and attitudinal opinion around digital technology, cloud and automation systems, has shifted. There is a willingness at most levels for innovative, transformational change.
It’s just about ensuring the right information, understanding and options are gathered to guarantee that any change is effective, well-adopted by staff and helps provide better end user experience; better patient care.
